<image:caption>For more than six years, artist Courtney McClellan has studied the relationship between performance and the law. Her inquiry centers on the legal simulations and professional practices used to educate future attorneys. During trial simulation, students may play the role of lawyer, witness, or judge in the courtroom. Their actions are often theatrical and their assertions are often speculative. Curator Robert Blackson said, “Simulation is practice in service to theory.” Simulations is a photo installation that includes images of practice courtrooms at law schools across the American South. The series depicts spaces that simultaneously function as courtroom, classroom, and theater. These sites occasionally host the actual adjudication of law, for example a state appellate case, and thus blur the boundaries between real and staged experience. McClellan's images address this interwoven architecture of training, performance, and power.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Overview - Here, Say</image:title>
<image:caption>Here, Say is an ongoing sculptural installation by artist Courtney McClellan. The installation, comprised of made and found objects, recreates a courtroom. With absurdity and poetry, the judicial system and its players are recast. Witness, defendant, plaintiff, judge, and jury conflate seeing and speaking, hearing and being seen. In this space theories are performed, arguments are made. Located at an entrance of the Lamar Dodd School of Art, the work invites practice, play and judgment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Booth, 2016. Southern yellow pine, mic clip, light bulb, shower curtain hooks, vinyl-coated mesh, steel, extension cord. Booth, a hybrid of a phone booth, a sound booth, and a voting booth, is a work that articulates concern about the power and influence of one person speaking to many. The microphone illuminates the viewer rather than projecting his/her/their voice. The ineffectual lectern faces the wall, while the perforated privacy curtain exposes the viewer inside. The gallery audience becomes both the voter/vocalist entering the booth and the observer peaking though the curtain. This work was created prior to the 2016 election.</image:caption>

<image:caption> Dueling Court Reporters, 2016. Image by Ashley L. Wood. Banquet chairs, mic stands, light bulbs, stenographs, steno paper, wood, plexiglass, vinyl. Dueling Court Reporters was created for Obstacle Course, an exhibition at the New Arts Center in Newton, M.A. This sculptural work, a play on dueling banjos, highlights the theatrical nature of the courtroom. By replacing the court reporter with an outdated stenograph, the work questions the role of the reporter as a gatekeeper of language and truth in the courtroom.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In process A disembodied eye scans a blueprint following a seemingly invisible being/ghost. He moves through the Backstage, the Coat Check and the Orchestral Pit. Footsteps, bangs, crashes, and music can be heard. Spooky pink text appears, speaking only in onomatopoeias: uh huhs, hahas, and sighs. The ghost decides to perform a play. After writing the play, creating the costume, and establishing the set, he performs, faking his death on stage for the absent audience (absent except for my video viewers, of course). Victorious, he walks off stage. The video loops. This project and the associated travel to Budapest, Hungary, is funded the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Traveling Fellowship.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Midlands: Setting Video still Midlands: Setting begins with a closely framed image of a judge’s bench. The camera pulls back, revealing the chair is in a grand, well-lit space. The panning camera raises further, revealing itself to be a drone moving through a two-story space, recording the red velvet chairs. From this aerial viewpoint, one can see vaulted ceilings, and wooden seats. Hovering over the witness chair, the drone looks back the familiar but empty courthouse.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Teleprompters are electronic displays that prompt speech. They are used in news casts and political speeches. Teleprompters come in many forms, but they all include a few elements: reflective surfaces, mirrored text, and a camera aperture. I reimagine teleprompters using familiar objects like picture frames, old suitcases, and music stands. The materials employed include grommets, lime green felt, baby blue velvet, and office supplies. The text they display are commands, but also Conversation Heart phrases, like “I’m yours”, or “Call me,” as well as emotional, performance delivery cues. The images included here are from “Laughing Maniacally,” a solo exhibition at THE END gallery in Atlanta, G.A.</image:caption>

Photography: Christopher Ankney Note: Witness Lab closed early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however we had a wonderful month of events. I continue to benefit from the generous and generative experience. From the Exhibition: An installation, performance site, and workspace, Witness Lab is a museum-based courtroom created by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan. This space serves as a venue for mock trials, staged readings, and other performances. Through creative interventions, Witness Lab seeks to understand the emotional acceptance of eyewitness testimony as fact—even though evidence shows that shared experiences are teaming with multiple, diverse, and sometimes contradictory perspectives. At its core, the installation is a performance project that unfolds over time, offering the public a complex truth: the relationship between performance and law is itself a living, evolving, interpretive act. Audiences are invited to attend performances and mock trials. Passersby can also observe the activity through the glass walls of the gallery. Taking the role of courtroom sketch artists, or court reporters, students from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design will document the events of the space through drawing, text, photography, and video—honing their observational skills by creating artistic records of the procedures.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Simulations - Simulations</image:title>
McClellan’s images address this interwoven architecture of training, performance, and power. https://mocaga.org/calendar/courtneymclellan/</image:caption>

      <image:caption>2018
Video still
7:34 Midlands: Setting begins with a closely framed image of a judge’s bench. The camera pulls back, revealing the chair is in a grand, well-lit space. The panning camera raises further, revealing itself to be a drone moving through a two-story space, recording the red velvet chairs. From this aerial viewpoint, one can see vaulted ceilings, and wooden seats within a courtroom. <image:caption>Digital print 32x40 2022 Simulations is a photo installation that includes images of practice courtrooms at law schools across the American South. The series depicts spaces that simultaneously function as courtroom, classroom, and theater. These sites occasionally host the actual adjudication of law, for example a state appellate case, and thus blur the boundaries between real and staged experience. The images address this interwoven architecture of training, performance, and power. <image:caption>The Advancement of Learning Public Art Project 4K video 1:35 2022 I am often drawn to institutional spaces and visual archives in order to consider how architecture indicates power. My response to A&E Local Stories began when I found archival photographs and a hand-drawn blueprint of the Carnegie Library in the digital collection at the Library of Congress. I was immediately curious about the blueprint because it reminded me of the board game Clue. In contrast, the 1930s archival photographs of the building’s columns were stately and imposing. To tell the story of a structure that was built, torn down and then rebuilt, I knew I needed to depict transformation but through a contemporary lens. I documented the blueprint like a mechanical eye scanning over an image, or a video game player moving through a virtual space. I repeated and layered the photographs of the columns on top of the moving blueprint. The columns then fall away, seeming to tumble over the edge into the real columned sculptures beneath the Breen Smith billboard. Finally, all that is left are the words taken from the old Carnegie Library facade: “Dedicated to the Advancement of Learning.” https://aeatlanta.com/view/the-advancement-of-learning</image:caption>

Photography: Christopher Ankney From the Exhibition: An installation, performance site, and workspace, Witness Lab is a museum-based courtroom created by Roman J.

The panning camera raises further, revealing itself to be a drone moving through a two-story space, recording the red velvet chairs.
Hovering over the witness chair, the drone looks back the familiar but empty courthouse. https://vimeo.com/335936186/601d2d97f7</image:caption>

The first exhibition of this work was at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia as part of the Working Artist Project Fellowship: https://mocaga.org/calendar/courtneymclellan/</image:caption>
